CTP Insurance is mandatory in South Australia. Significant penalties apply if a vehicle is driven or found on a road without CTP Insurance.

When you register a motor vehicle, part of the fee is applied towards CTP Insurance.

CTP Insurance provides compensation for personal injury to people injured in road crashes where the driver or owner of a South Australian registered vehicle is at fault. It may also cover crash victims where a passenger is at fault. Compensation payments are funded by the CTP Insurance premiums paid by all South Australian motorists.

CTP Insurance is sometimes confused by people with Third Party Property (TPP) Insurance. CTP covers personal injury whereas TPP applies to property damage (e.g. your damaged car).

The CTP scheme is operated by the Motor Accident Commission (MAC) however from 1 July 2016 the MAC will cease its role as the sole provider of CTP vehicle insurance in South Australia to open the way for provision of CTP insurance by the private sector.
